OSSANNA The Unix community was saddened, and greatly diminished, by the recent death of Joe Ossanna. As author of NROFF/TROFF he spoke to us at the Urbana meeting and those of us who used early versions of the typesetter package will forever be in his debt for the generosity with which he gave of his time to explain the obvious to us. We-join with his many friends at Bell Laboratories in expressing our sympathy to his family. AT LAST! f° On February 27, 1978, Prentice-Hall will publish "The C Pro- ramming Language” by Dennis Ritchie and Brian Kernigan ($9.95). «teed we say more? STILL RUNNING LATE We are still playing “catch-up". This newsletter is being prepared in early February 1978 and is the last issue of Volume 2. The next issue, nominally December-January, will be mailed before the end of February. Enclosed with that issue will be an invoice for Volume 3 {1978). SOFTWARE DISTRIBUTION We spoke too soon, in the last issue, about catching up in Janu- ary. We had a disk failure which took both the newsletter and the software distribution off the air for the entire month of January. No copies of the Toronto Distribution have been mailed as yet. Mailings will resume soon, we hope. TYPESETTER SIMULATION This page appears twice in this issue. The first copy is the usual hototypesetter output. The second copy is the product of the Toron- » typesetter simulator for the Versatec. The spacing between characters in the Versatec simulation does not appear correct due to the fact that the phototypesetter is mounted with the Sovran font and therefore the Toronto software is taking those font widths into account in calculating its spacing even though it is printing using Roman fonts, MOVING Please note the new mailing address for Mel Ferentz. Editorial work will shift to Rockefeller University, the mailing list will remain at Brooklyn College, while typesetting and software distribution will con- tinue to be done at_CUNY/UCC. The Rockefeller University has agreed to act as fiscal agent for the Users’ Group. All checks, whether for tapes, subscriptions, mail- ing charges, or any other purpose should be made payable to "The Rockefeller University”. The new invoice form, which is being prepared for the 1978 billing will reflect this change. In order to assure proper delivery, all mail to the new address should be addressed to "Box 8". NEW YORK MEETING By this time you should have received, and returned, the form for reserving rooms at Columbia University for the New York Meeting. The rooms in the Columbia University dorms must be reserved, with deposit by the end of February. If you wish a room, but cannot gen- erate a check in time, just send the form back, to "Box 8", marked “check will follow" and we will advance the money to Columbia for you. Checks may be made out either as indicated on the reservation form or to the new fiscal agent. The library is used by university, governmental, and industrial organizations for building application software in science and engineering. The library provides general purpose "building blocks" callable from users' programs. Library subprograms are divided into chapters according to their function. User documentation chapter titles are: Analysis of Experimental Design Data Mathematical & Statistical Special Basic Statistics Functions Categorized Data Analysis Non-Parametric Statistics Differential Equations; Quadrature; Observation Structure (Multivariate Differentiation Statistics) Eigensystem Analysis Regression Analysis Forecasting; Econometrics; Time Series Samp ling Generation and Testing of Random Numbers Utility Functions Interpolation; Approximation; Smoothing Vector-Matrix Arithmetic Linear Algebraic Equations Zeros & Extrema; Linear Programming Library subscribers lease the library from IMSL on an annual (or longer) basis. Materials provided include (1) The Fortran source tape (2) One fully maintained and bound Library Reference Manual (3) The IMSL Numerical Computations Newsletter, distributed periodically (4) One bound and fully maintained General Information Manual Subscription services include (1) The automatic distribution of new library editions containing new and/or improved routines (new tape and modification pages for the Reference Manual) (2) Maintenance of library elements and the Reference Manual between editions (3) Telephone or mail consultation on library usage (4) A mechanism for requesting new routines for future library editions Considerations guiding development of the library include accuracy (algorithm selection and implementation), ease of usage, portability (identical subprogram names and calling: sequences across hardware types) and maintenance of the library at the level of current numerical technology. The PDP-11 version of the library is in single precision and is based on IMSL's current library for Xerox computers. Testing was performed on a PDP-11/70 under Digital Equipment Corporation's Fortran IV compiler. Anyone desiring additional information may contact : Mr. John J.
