Gopher is a neat little thing. I know it got subplanted by http as the defacto information protocol on the net but it's neat to play with. Unlike http, the protocol is very simple; you can use nc to produce pages, everything is human readable. It's a bit limited in functionality, but in some ways that's a good thing. In my opinion the limitations imposed by the protocol keep it clean.
